Manchester United recently announced that Dutch national team boss Louis van Gaal will be becoming their new manager for the upcoming campaign. The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager is set to step down after the World Cup 2014. He recently named the final 23 man squad for the World Cup that included Manchester United striker Robin van Persie. Spaniard Juan Mata, who will also be involved in the World Cup, says that van Gaal should bring trophies back to Old Trafford.
United come on the back of a very disappointing season under David Moyes, which led to the Scot losing his job just 10 months after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson. The club are expected to spend heavily in the summer in the hope of being a top club once again. During his incredible record of having one league titles at all of his previous clubs, many expect United to be a challenger under van Gaal. Mata will be coming up against the Spaniard at the World Cup in the group stages. Spain take on Netherlands in the opening match of the group, which also includes teams like Australia and Chile.
Spain and Netherlands, though, are the overwhelming favourites to reach the knockout stages. “It’s been a difficult year, but I think this season we will improve and we will try to win again, because Manchester United is about winning and fighting for titles. [Van Gaal] is a very experienced manager. He likes to play in an offensive way, so hopefully he can bring success and trophies to the club and to the players. The last three or four months for me were great. I played a lot,” said the former Chelsea midfielder, who moved to United in a £ 37 million deal last January. He has already scored several goals for his new club.
